Forecast for Mammoth & the Owens Valley

A massive and very dynamic upper low will swing across the Pacific Northwest and into the Great Basin Tuesday bringing strong winds and cooler temperatures for the next few days. It will effect our area Tuesday into Wednesday dropping temperatures and creating the chance of mountain showers and thunderstorms in the High Country. Caution to those hikers in the High Country for the possibility of lighting strikes, particularly from Mammoth northward. There is a High Wind Warning for the High Country and the Owens Valley starting at 12 noon today into Wednesday. Extreme down slope turbulence is possible along the east side of the Sierra in the Owens Valley with rotor activity possible particularly from Independence to Big Pine. As of 7:30 am this morning, Fort Independence already had recorded wind gusts of 39 mph. Red Flag Warning conditions expected as the fire danger will be extreme.

Today for Bishop & the Owens Valley: Mostly sunny skies turning partly cloudy in the afternoon. Daytime temps in the mid 80s and evening lows in the upper 40s. West wind 10 -20 increasing to 25 - 35 with gusts of 55 mph at canyon openings.

Tomorrow for Bishop & the Owens Valley: Mostly sunny skies, breezy and cooler. Daytime temps in the mid 70s and evening lows in the lower 40s. Southwest wind 10 -20 mph.

Today for Mammoth & the Mono Valleys: Partly cloudy and breezy in the morning becoming mostly cloudy and windy in the afternoon. Chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Chance of light snow down to 7,500 feet in the evening. High temperature range mid 50s for the Main Lodge and mid 60s for the Mono Valleys. Low temp range 36 - 46. Southwest wind 15 - 20 mph gusting to 35 in the afternoon and evening.

Tomorrow for Mammoth & the Mono Valleys: Partly cloudy and continued breezy. High temperature range upper 40s for the Main Lodge and upper 50s for the Mono Valleys. Low temp range 25 - 35. West wind 10 - 20 mph gusting to 35 in the afternoon and evening.

Shortwave energy will continue to drop into that upper low though Thursday keeping temps below normal through Friday. Ridging begins to build in on Saturday with warming temperatures into the weekend.
