Hobbes >>> "Not sure anyone is doing any steering..."

Of course it is true that no ONE, as in individuals within the "vast corporate, political, real estate, and financial powers of the world" except for a few very rich billionairs and top politicians are doing much effective steering of the course of our western society, but together as a power complex of those in power, are controlling it, inconsiderately, short sightedly, accelerating the planet's demise.

I disagree that changing this course our society is on is so hopeless that trying to do so ought be ignored. Our wealth driven consumer society is on a self destructive path with these fires just one of a long list of slowly growing ills.

Accept ecological reality and roll back denial;
Change our worldview to ecocentrism, and abandon the false dream of ‘Mastery of Nature’;
Control population growth through education, family planning and non-coercive, humane strategies ;
Roll back the deliberately-constructed consumer ethic ;
Move past growthism to a steady state economy ;
Solve climate change urgently, focusing on mitigation;
Apply appropriate technology, especially 100% renewables within 2-3 decades, along with major energy efficiency and conservation ;
Reduce poverty and inequality, while simultaneously supporting the ‘Nature Needs Half’ vision ;
Establish comprehensive education for sustainability based on ecological reality and ecocentrism;
Create the political will for change – Act!

Dave, I'm sort of surprised this kind of doomer sentiment is coming from a resident Silicon valley tech/engineer such as yourself. You, more than most, may know why RE prices continue to increase along the Peninsula, and it's not just because of social media and the stock market.

Rather, it's domestic & foreign investment flowing in not only by private individuals & enterprises, but also sovereign wealth funds (China, cough, India). And why is that? Because SV is ground zero for the most cutting edge scientific and technology developments occurring in electronics, health care and related fields. As such, the world's leading investors & economies want to get in on a piece of the action. (Flamingo, where are you?)

Humanity may very well be on a course of separating our physical selves from our intellectual capabilities. If we can transport our 'spiritual' selves to the grid in any in any meaningful fashion, our avg (carbon) footprint could be reduced by current orders of magnitude. This type of environment of course opens up inter-planetary travel as light waves move fast and don't have significant biological overhead requirements. (Same process driving hi-perf drones that can easily exceed the Gs that knock out pilots.)

Anyway, not to hijack the thread, but no matter what happens to our beautiful state, it's the place to be, regardless of short-term challenges.

Nice pot shot Jeff being funny. :)

[For the sake of not boring an audience, on the Internet much is casually tersely communicated without covering all possible ways statements might be literally interpreted.]

and Hobbes yeah I could say a lot negatively about West Coast real estate but as maverick noted that ain't about the subject.

What's really causing these fire is humans. There have been hot, dry spells throughout history. The change in that formula is humans. As the number of humans increase does the amount of fire activity. About 80% of all wildland fires are caused by humans. Either intentionally set or by misuse. In my opinion, most of the fires are intentionally set. When you read the final report of a fire and it lists undetermined or suspicious as the cause, it usually means arson. Fires just don't start out of nowhere. There has to be a source of ignition and human activity fits that attribute.

Authorities arrested two men who they say were seen setting a brush fire near Morris Dam in the Angeles National Forest on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pete Shupe said Christopher Ortega, 20, of Glendora and Santino Gnaulati, 21, of Covina were booked on suspicion of arson...
Someone saw two men start a fire by Highway 39, mile marker 21.33, and followed the suspects as they drove away, Shupe said.

If there were an increase in ignitions there should be an increase in the number of wildfires. But that hasn't happened in California. So the human element, while certainly part of the picture, doesn't explain the increase in the size, scope, and intensity of recent fires. Those symptoms point to environmental factors.
