Outside of leaving the hood up that lets in sunlight that discourages their clandestine activity, have never done anything through several trips of many days. Will speculate marmots tend to target new vehicles that have newish plastics and rubber parts that out gas fragrance strongly. My old dirty grubby Subaru's parts are ignored even during early season.

There is a theory which I can neither refute or confirm. Yes, large rodents like marmots like to chew on rubber and some plastics that seem like rubber. Apparently they are not killed by lapping up small amounts of spilled radiator coolant, as you would expect of any normal mammal.

So, one backpacker who parks in Mineral King has this practice. He parks his car in one end of the parking lot. Then he puts the bait at the other end of the parking lot. The bait is an old piece of radiator hose with a fresh scent of coolant on it. He expects that the marmots will go for the bait instead of his car.

I certainly don't know. The rangers might catch him.

One year, upon returning to Tar Gap Trailhead, we saw a marmot under our car. It's a good thing we opened the hood before we started the engine since the marmot would have been pulverized. It had been eating our hoses. Luckily, we were able to get to Three Rivers without the car seriously overheating by riding in neutral most of the way down. Although we replaced the hoses so we could drive home, the vehicle still required extensive repairs.

Now that we're talking marmots in MK, I was wondering if there was a service where you could park your car outside of the park and then pay for a ride up the mountain and back. Trouble is I don't know if there's a safe place to park in Three Rivers. Maybe this part of my post belongs in the Transportation To & From forum. But I thought I would mention it here since alot of the animal annoyances being discussed in this thread are MK marmots and the damage they do to vehicles which is quite costly in terms of time and expense.
