Kearsarge Lakes Bear Boxes

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Kearsarge Lakes Bear Boxes

Post by SNOOOOW »

So we spent a few nights at Kearsarge Lakes last month and the bear boxes out in the backcountry that are locked and unavailable for use peaked my interest. Does anybody know why those are there if not for the use of backcountry hikers? We did see more than 1 bear out there but the bears did not seem to bother anybody, just wandered around the lake and leaving us people alone. Maybe the boxes were used in the past but with the amount of people going over the pass in both directions and the amount of backpackers out there the bear boxes were not enough for everybody so now nobody gets to use them?? Anyone have any knowledge of this...

Probably locked because of abuse from people trying to cache food there instead of hiking out over the pass.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Thanks Mav. Just as suspected. I carry a bear canister anyway.
