HST years

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Chocolate is a serious subject matter around here, at least for some us here CG. Brought along 4 brands of high end chocolates, for an impromptu chocolate tasting at the last Meet-up. ;)

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

LOL, there were no "should"s involved, ergo, no "shouldn't"s either.

That sig is pointing to that critical parent within each of us who's always judging us. We tell ourselves we should have done this and we shouldn't have done that, etc.

I was hiking with a new group a couple of months ago and there was this very pleasant woman who kept saying she should be faster, she shouldn't be holding people up. I told her nothing good ever came from should. It just came out and I liked it :D Is it narcissistic to quote yourself???

Mav: I know folks who live to eat chocolate (and/or bacon). I can survive without it in the city, but in the mountains, it's my vitamin C. However, I cannot handle much more than 70% cocoa, so I'm probably on the wimpy side there.
JimR: If you're a narcissist, you hide it well. I'd say laconic is a better descriptor.

No, I can change that Cam, good 70% chocolate and above, that is smooth and has a wonderful cocoa flavor, like last years International Chocolate Awards winner "Selva Maya" from Bonnat Chocolatier (France), a 75% chocolate bar, bean sourced from Mexico, was also the top chocolate of 8, at my last chocolate tasting, and the word bitter or strong did not come out of anyones mouth. Hopefully the next time we meet in the backcountry, we will have a little chocolate tasting of our own. ;)

I also give thanks to Eric for putting the forums together and running things all these years. I do not do the usual social media, so this is really my only online "home". For me it has very much helped to fill the void created when ATT pulled the plug on my website back in 2010. It continues to be fun to learn from others on this board and to meet new friends. I also very much enjoy the opportunity to do my part to make the High Sierra wilderness more enjoyable and rewarding for others.

Regarding chocolate and the like, whereas I do in fact like chocolate (especially in the 70-80% range), it is the high mountains themselves that are my vitamin C.

Can't say it was my goal to get chocolate leads from this thread, but since I'm still waiting to find the chocolate that surpasses what one could get from the chocolatier (a Belgian supplier, Elena, who appears no longer to be in business) at Harrods and Selfridges in London in the early '80's, I'm more than willing to give it a whirl. Since I've noticed that most anything tastes good in the mountains (Spam? Velveeta?), the real test will be whether it holds up in the big city. Well, now I have a new mission! Gracias.
