Helping Get Underserved Youth Outdoors

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Helping Get Underserved Youth Outdoors

Post by davidsheridan »

Hello High Sierra Topix Community,

I am a board member and very active volunteer with and awesome non-profit called Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) http://www.bawt.org

To date BAWT has helped over 50,000 underserved youth experience California’s wilderness and public lands. We target low income communities and our unique model empowers communities to lead their own trips.

1) We train teachers and youth workers on how to safely lead and manage youth on backpacking and camping trips
2) After a leader has been trained, they can take kids from their own communities on amazing trips
3) BAWT provides FREE gear loans from their enormous “gear libraries” (we are opening our 4th gear library in January in SF)
4) Not just tents and sleeping bags, we provide almost everything you would need to have a successful outdoor trip including rain gear, poly-pro underwear, complete camp kitchens, hiking boots, jackets, snow shoes, backpacks, trekking pole water bottles, etc… ALL FOR FREE
5) We provide trip planning support and funding and community support

There are so many ways to get involved to support BAWT. There are so many reasons why I think this group of people will connect to what we do. We are a small and scrappy nonprofit, but we are incredibly effective.

Here are some ways that you might learn more and get connected to Help Get Youth Outdoors!
Attend a Discovery Session and Volunteer night in Oakland (2017 dates: Jan 18, Feb 22, Mar 15, Apr 19, May 17, Sep 20, Oct 18)

Climbing for Kids Adventure Fundraising (You raise funds for BAWT , in return you get a mountain guide service, and $1,500 worth of top of the line gear, and have the adventure of a life time)

Become a "Gear Core Volunteer" - Repair gear and get it back into the inventory and out on youth trips - Wednesday evenings @ BAWT's Oakland headquarters
