One of two things come to mind. They were searching and ran across growers. Or, the subject searched for was running from the long arm of the law, and SAR was helping to find him.

Another possibility might be it was one of those people who insists they need a gun to protect themselves or just to play around, and it was a misunderstanding. All kinds of entitled people who make life difficult out there.

One SAR volunteer was shot in the hip and is incapacitated but stable.
Thankfully not fatal. But seriously, who does this... I don't know, growers are my suspicion also.

Along the Yuba River in Nevada County - also possibly a "miner" defending his claim against interlopers. Gold fever with a gun = danger.

Yes, both growers and mining/dredging folks are a hazard in that region. In fact I have encountered a few more of the latter than the former. My students and I have had some scary encounters with both types of folks during my years of doing field geology in this area.

Over the years this has strongly influenced my strategy on geologic research projects in this region. The bottom line is I try to choose areas that minimize the chances of such encounters.

A friend on that team indicated it was not a grower, and the team saw the shooter - the shooter clearly saw them, what with the orange shirts and everything.

Search suspended, missing person not found, investigation into the shooting under way.

If they saw the shooter, why couldn't they find the person? No one who could shoot back?
