Hume Lake Dam $3 Million Facelift

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Hume Lake Dam $3 Million Facelift

Post by maverick »

Warren Trost learned to fish from his father.

"As a little kid you're always splashing the water and this and that, so he'd make you stay behind him," Trost said.

His dad's gone now, but Trost and his brother have been keeping that tradition going.

The brothers are retired. They've been coming to Hume Lake since they were kids.

"We've always been that type of family to get outdoors and do things," Trost said.

They're not the only ones enjoying the views, including this new facing on the lake's dam. It was attached after a leak turned bad.

"More of a trickle until this last year, and then it really became kind of a steady stream of seepage," U.S. Forest Service ranger Teresa Benson said.

Officials couldn't drain the lake to make repairs, because of the Rough Fire.

In mid-October, rangers took the plunge.

You can see the process in these pictures. A mini-dam was built in front.

Crews even battled snowy conditions, all to re-grout cracks and place this grey weather-resistant covering over the entire front of the 60-foot-high dam.

"Hume Lake, it's our namesake," Benson said.

Benson says the dam, built in 1908, is also historic.

"It's the first concrete reinforced multi-arched dam in America."

Thanks to their work, the dam should have 50 to 100 years before more major upgrades need to be done.

Years Trost and many more hope to enjoy.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
