According to the Sacramento Bee, the guy left his trash out on the porch which obviously drew the bear in. I think he should have known better. I'm not saying he "had it coming" but that's not the smartest move in bear territory.

Well there you go, bear was hungry, this guy was careless, and the bear has to suffer for it, not justice in my book. :\

In this era any bear that attacks a person receives a death penalty. A couple decades ago that was not the case. But I recall reading stories back then where a bear wasn't shot and then the media interviewing people that wanted such wild creatures shot. Typical news media tact to stir up controversies. Suspect eventual result of years of that was those in public lands management got advice from their lawyers that if someone ever actually got attacked or worse killed by any bear that had been let loose or not hunted down until found and shot that there would likely be lawsuits. Of course in this era whenever someone gets hurt or worse killed by circumstances involving large companies or government agencies, an army of drooling personal injury lawyers are quick to swoop down to be in on lawsuits. And predictably with the threat of damages in the millions because someone soiled their britches after being scared by a bear, the public agencies are going to opt to quietly settle out of court instead of waging an expensive legal battle.

So am speculating the reason bears today are always shot is indirectly because of the American legal system and lawyers.
