Hot springs at Reds Meadow

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Hot springs at Reds Meadow

Post by markskor »

Another ironic development:

As many know, the naturally-fed hot spring showers at Reds Meadow have been closed/locked down for a few years now. Why?...we will probably never know the real reason why they were closed...been there for decades too...BTW, they were free to use.

Additionally there was that big square hot tub in the same area (located about 25' south of the 6 "now locked" showers) that was functional/warm/amazing/free until someone did a water EPA quality check and discovered something (heavy metals?) that necessitated this free tub also being closed too - a big metal grate now locked down over the top.

Now rumor has it that Reds Meadow is in the process of installing a "Pay-for-use" hot tub complex that taps into the same hot springs that once fed the "now closed" but free showers and hot tub.
Times are a changing? Wonder who got paid off.

Hmmm, no surprise unfortunately. I wonder if the concessionaires rent/lease the space and buildings from the USFS or??

When it opens as a pay-per-dunk; take a water sample have it analyzed and see if it's still contaminated? Or ask them how they removed said contaminates...Yeah good luck.

I was told that they had a new manager for the area and because the water is non potable he shut it down to cover his own liability. That old mighty magic word that dominates our culture!

Since the resort has been cashing in on charging 7 dollars for the use of their showers I'm sure they will keep pressure on to keep them closed.
