In the mid 90's Yellowstone offered a pair of grizzlies to Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon. The Yose/Seki superintendents turned down the offer. They haven't given up.

"Grizzlies were abundant in the Sierra, but they also caught salmon in the rivers that emptied into the San Francisco Bay."

I suggest we first introduce the grizzlies near the San Francisco office of the Center for Biological Diversity. After all the Bay area was apparently part of the bears natural habitat.

But seriously, the bear attack statistics I've looked wouldn't lead me to believe brown bears are any worse than black bears. Both try to avoid people.

The historical range was the entire state, not just the Sierra Nevada. So I am certain the Center for Brain-dead Pomposity would agree to the first batch of re-introduced bears would be in Golden Gate Park, L.A.'s Griffith Park and Santa Monica Mtns, and Sacramento's American River Parkway.

They would not want to be accused of hypocrisy insisting the rural areas of the state suffer the entire burden of a bear (or wolf) population without suffering it themselves.

I see some 3 S wildlife management in the future... (Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up).

The California Grizzly was a different species from what I have read. They lived more in the foothills than in the High Sierra.

Different species (or subspecies). That was the reason given 20 years ago for not taking the Yellowstone grizzlies: "If they were California grizzlies we would take them".
