The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Advanced Hunter Education Program is sponsoring a Wilderness Survival and Land Navigation Clinic on August 23-24. The overnight workshop will be held in the Crystal Basin area, east of Placerville.

The clinic is designed to help students learn and practice basic navigation skills using a map, compass and global positioning system. The workshop will include hands-on training and lab exercises. Topics to be covered include magnetic declination, the workings of a baseplate compass, map reading, how to stay oriented naturally, taking bearings and how to use map coordinate systems and GPS. The clinic will also cover basic wilderness survival techniques.

The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 and conclude at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. The cost is $65 for adults. Youths 16 years and younger are free, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Space is limited to 20 participants and advance registration is required. Registration forms are available online at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/advanced/index.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
CDFW’s Advanced Hunter Education Program will provide all necessary class equipment, including compasses and GPS, and campground reservations. Students must provide their own food, water and camping equipment.

Crystal Basin is located 49 miles northeast of Placerville, in the El Dorado National Forest.
