Weather Forecast 09.27.06

Grab your bear can or camp chair, kick your feet up and chew the fat about anything Sierra Nevada related that doesn't quite fit in any of the other forums. Within reason, (and the HST rules and guidelines) this is also an anything goes forum. Tell stories, discuss wilderness issues, music, or whatever else the High Sierra stirs up in your mind.

Owens Valley & High Sierra Forecast
Fort Independence EPA Met Station
EPA Site No: 06-027-1028
0826 PDT 27 Sep 2006

All:

Short Term…Portions of a weak upper low snuck over the Crest yesterday kicking of isolated showers but no reported lightning strikes. There should be some cumulus buildup this afternoon and possible isolated T-Storms, but the main energy associated with that low is no longer much of a factor. Otherwise, mostly sunny to partly cloudy today and Thursday with little change in temp. The High Country should see daytime temps in the upper 60s and lows in the mid 30s. The Owens Valley will have highs in the low 80s and nighttime temps in the mid 40s.

Long Term…Friday through Sunday, the west coast ridge begins to break down, lowering temps slightly and increasing clouds and winds on Sunday. A fairly potent upper low could begin to influence our area by the middle of next week; will have to monitor closely to see just what affect it will have.

I'll see about setting up a blog on the Weather Page that only Dennis can post to.

Thanks for the reports!

I slept at Horseshoe Mdws (~10K) Fri night and it was 32 deg at 2am (Sat). Didn't get day temps, but it was comfortable with a jacket. I was tired and did stuff in the truck with the doors open (repacking, started reading "Last Season").

Got up at 3am at Whitney Portal and it was 34 deg (8,500'). Water is freezing. Think layer of ice on Lower Boy Scout Lake, falls below Iceberg Lake is turning to ice, and water on the switchbacks is just a trickle now.

A friend camped at Bishop Pass, and temps were low 30s.

Hi Snowy:

Thanks for your temp updates, they assist with making my forecast as accurate as possible. If they come in on a timely fashion, I may use some of the data in my weather forecast.
