SN..So sad about the little baby sheep. How very cool it must have been to see all those sheep!

Great shots as always SN. I've heard a few nightmare stories about that road from a ranger in bishop - maily a few vehicles losing breaks and going over the edge. No idea about their validity, but the road does look a tad steep in parts ;) The sheep and wild horse are cool. Since I got my 4wd earlier this year I've been wanting to tackle more roads like this one in that area, just a far drive for me for the weekend.

Always wondered what that road looked like. At least the sections you put on the slide show looked doable in even my Subaru. Well might not have the wheelbase to go through that creek? Right at the top where the road reaches the summit plateau below the radio tower, has a small section outside the Inyo NF bristlecone reserve boundaries and is the only place in the southern section of the reserve where one might legally camp. (Camping in the reserve is illegal.) Someone at the Schulman Grove visitor center told me about that horse in Campito Meadow a few years ago. Supposedly up there every summer with the meadow all to itself. Other wild horse do roam some areas in the remote northern White Mountains also have small wild horse herds. When we passed by a couple weeks ago I had an urge to walk out to see him and offer up the apple I had not yet eaten. ...David

Hi Snow Nymph,
I always enjoy your picture stories. A fellow photographer has attempted the Siver Canyon and told me it is really steep....

Gee, when I was a grad. student we tried to take an ordinary Chevy van up Silver Canyon Rd, heheheheh. Probably fortunately, the van just didn't have enough poop to go up the steep parts, and we had to do a very dicey, long reverse before we could find a place to turn around. When we got back, our advisor (who was very experienced in the White Mountains) said, "you WHAT?!?!?!?!" Ah, well...

Silver Canyon Road was pretty steep. I would have taken my 4Runner up this road. SnowDude took his Chevy Blazer ZR2 up/down it a few years ago. When he got to the bottom he had a flat tire (he had the MT/Rs, but they were pretty worn by then). He was ready to get new tires anyway. The Swansea Grade is a different story. After driving it a 3rd time, I probably wouldn't take the 4Runner.

Dave, I don't remember how deep the water was, but there were no obstacles, so you could just plow thru it.
