2006 (June 17) Black Mtn, East Summit, Reed Mountain (Inyo Mtns)

Photos: http://community.webshots.com/album/551490256WzdQTF

Dayclimbed Black Mtn (9,083') and its east summit (slightly lower). I had more time, so I looked in my Desert Summits book for another peak, and found Reed Mtn (11,033') for a quick summit

I just LOVE those owls :D Gosh that is so lucky you saw them. Beautiful pictures SN, looks like you had a nice solo hike. Those old log structures are cool, would be interesting to know the history of them

Thanks for the reminder (I was going to add to the photo)

Got this from LarryW from the desert forums:

The dugout log cabins up in the Bristolcone Pine Forests were there to house the indians that worked in the mountain mines up there. They were used to the high altitude and worked much harder than the average white man. The other photo is that of a caved adit to a mine that has been filled in. Someone else said it was just a tunnel for storage. Depends on who you listen to.

Saw more owls this weekend. They were flying over us in the dark. I used my headlamp and took photos as they flew over. Not clear, but cool photos.

I think they might have smelled/seen the shrimp tray that was sitting on a boulder in our campsite as we were getting ready for dinner.
