Hey Snowy,

I have a friend who just got a 4x4 and he is interested in doing some camping, fishing, and some off road. What tops your list for all three activities for southern CA or the southern Sierras?

Hi Dave,

I have not done any offroading in SoCal so far. All the offroading has been in Panamint Valley, Death Valley or the Inyos. This last trip was pretty awesome, and tested my newbie offroad driving skills. (:) When SnowDude gets back I'm taking him up there because I know he'll love it! For your friend, no fishing at the above places. But the offroading and camping is FUN! On Sunday we drove thru rockbeds and that was a blast! I chickened out on the waterfall, though. Still working on pics. :D

Defense Mine, Minietta Cabin, Reilly Townsite and Trona Pinnacles

Six Rubi's drove to Defense Mine. Then Andy took us on a tour thru the mine, which took us a few levels up (ladders).

Then we went to the Minietta Adopt-a-Cabin. Our group split up, and from there Bill and Kathy took us to the Reilly Townsite and gave us a little tour. Our group got smaller, and we stopped at the Trona Pinnacles before heading home.

Fun weekend! (:)

I haven't done a whole lot yet . . . still a newbie

1. Swansea Grade - Burgess Mine - Inyo Crest - Salt Tram - Cerro Gordo - Yellow Grade Road. Road was in good shape, some steep sections, 2 off camber areas, great views all around, 3 mining sites. Going back this weekend and doing it in reverse, and will camp up there!

2. Minietta Road to Defense Mine. The road was fun and challenging to drive. The bonus was the Defense Mine at the end. Looked like a good spot to camp. There was a road going to Lookout City but we didn't go that way. Sounds like it might be interesting.

3. Pleasant Canyon - South Park Loop - one hairy section that I couldn't drive so SnowDude did it. Then we descended a shortcut that was off camber and I couldn't do that either. But it was a fun drive with a few cabins and mines along the way. If the cabins are empty you can stay in them.

I will report back when I do more of these trips. I just picked up "Death Valley SUV Trails" by Roger Mitchell.
