High Sierra Topix

June 1, 2006, a friend had an extra slot on the permit and I played hookey from student teaching, with permission, to hike the summit of Gorgonio again, twice in as many weeks. This was a long hike, 21 miles round trip, about 11.0 hours hiking.

Left the trailhead lot at 0700 hrs, the weather was perfect. Warm and breezy all day. Started out at 48 degrees, but the sun came out and it was perfect. Slight breeze all day keeps the bugs away, which were minimal. Snow was not a real factor, but did play a part in some minor annoyances...took a side route a few times to avoid some traverses, also took a hard right above the tarn to the summit to avoid a large field, I hate heights; also not the first folks to do so.

Thanks to you all. It was a heck of a day hike. However, it is all about getting in shape and ready to tackle Whitney, for the fourth time, taking two newbies + 1 PCT through hiker with me. Until then.

By the way, for those who are interested, doing a small jaunt up Mt. San Antonio (Baldy) on June 17th...

I did the peak from Vivan Creek trailhead on Sunday. What a difference a few days makes -- it was probably 75 degrees when I started!

There is almost no snow left on the Vivian Creek trail. It's more elevation gain, but shorter than the Dry Lake route. I haven't been above sea level since September, and was practically gasping for breath in the parking lot, at 6000 feet.

Did the Vivian Creek Trail two weeks ago, yes it is a major walk uphill.

True, true. I noticed photos of Jacinto from the VCT vs. SFT, that the area was far more hazy on the second trip than the first. But smog does make the sunsets pretty...so they tell me.
