Ruby Crest Trail in Nevada???

Postby SteveB » Wed Dec 28, 2005 5:02 pm

I was looking through my book in search of some nice quiet hikes this summer, and I came across the Ruby Crest Trail in the Ruby Mountains. Anyone ever done this trail? Transpo from one end to the other? I'm thinking about late spring in 2006. Any thoughts?

In my newbie days in the early '70's, I tried to go out for a few days in the area there, but bad weather and a lack of a shelter and confidence send me home after one day. You would need to hitch hike back, or go with someone else and leave one vehicle at the other end. I know someone over there in Spring Creek from when we went to school in Eureka. I lived in Elko for about 15 months, working and attending the community college.

I can't recall much about the terrain or scenery.

Steve Armstrong from the Backpacker Magazine forum mentioned a wilderness south of Austin which gets hardly anyone visiting. A long ways in the middle of no where.

Steve: I've heard that area is really nice. I'm heading that way in early July this year to check it out and try Ruby Dome.

I'm looking forward to it! It looks like there's a lot of high lakes along the trail and in the Ruby's, so it should prove quite the trip! :) My training has already started!

SteveB,
I visited the Ruby Mountains about 18 months ago. Just scouting for future trips. I hiked to Liberty Pass from the Lamoille Canyon trailhead and was very impressed. Very Sierra like. We then drove down to Harrison Pass to check out the southern end of the trail. This was a well graded dirt road for the last 5 miles or so up to the pass. Anyway I haven't been back yet, but what a great little range of mountains. The Ruby Crest Nat'l Recreation Trail traverses the range.
