Where will you be staying?
There is always the Volcano, the crater has some nice hiking but take plenty on water, think grand canyon conditions.
Poli-Poli park has a few short trails and great views, just like the costal redwoods.
No the drive to Hana you will find many short trails to waterfalls that are worth the time. We really liked the hike to the waterfalls from the Oheo glutch area thru the Bamboo forest. The is a short hike of about two miles.
Have you been to Maui before?

Thanks Frediver
We have a reservation for a 1 bedroom condo in Kihei...some local folks own it and rent it out for $360/ 7 days. Cheap , clean and cozy...should make a nice basecamp

Last time I was on Maui, was 33 years ago with my parents,
my wife has never been.

Just Curious

Hey frediver...Thanks for the "Things To Do" list!
Lots of great info in there, I appreciate that!

Maui Vista is the name of the place, we're staying in the first building.
Looks to be across the street from Charley Young Beach & Kamaole Beach Park 1.

We have zero experience snorkeling....but my wife and I would love to view the Sea Turtles and other marine critters.

Really want to visit Hana....I have this thing about photographing waterfalls

Whats up with Hawaiians and Vowels?
Pukaauhuhu, Kipahulu, Puuiki....LOL!
I guess I will have to pay attention to how the locals pronounce things :D

Charley Young and Kam 1 are good walking beaches, for a swimming beach head for Kam 111, you will usually have good parking.
Also get a snorkel guide at any Maui Dive shop. I do not get my gear there, just the maps. I get my gear from Maui Dreams dive shop, its a local place and very friendly.

For Turtles try Wailea beach, usually good parking if you get there early.
Most of the best snorkeling will happen before 12noon due to the trade winds.
Save time for an evening booze cruise from Lahaina but forget the dinner cruise.
Ahihi Bay is always (90%) good for snorkeling.
Maui Vista is a nice Condo We have used them in the past they have a great central location.
BTW Charles Lindbergh is buried about 8 mi past Hana., Lt turn just past mi marker #41. PalaPala Ho'omau Church yard. As I recall it's really a Lt off the road and a Lt. again to the Church, It's been 2 years since we visited the Church yard. It's a very tiny Church.
If you plan to snorkel and want to take pictures then stop at wal-mart to pickup a waterproof camera, get the snapsight camera with the flash, price $14.95 last check. The flash will make all the difference, the focus distance for the best picture with this camera is about 5-6ft. The camera is re-loadable and good to 100ft. so I would feel safe to about 60ft.
For land photography head upcountry in the early AM. You will have your choice of sunup at Haleakala and cruising around on your way back. You can get some great pictures of the sunrise line as it crosses the island.
If you have not been to Maui in 33years you will be shocked and maybe disappointed but there are still many places to get away from it all.
