Snow shoeing or cross country skiing in big bear

Post by overheadx2 »

The wife and I headed up to big bear this weekend to go practice some XC skiing. The place was a zoo, but only 10 minutes away in Fawnskin we found 1 to 3 feet of untouched snow with miles of fire roads to choose from. I've been going there for a long time and have never seen the snow that nice. We came home today after 3 days of skiing and just our tracks and a lone snow shoe track on the road to Butler Peak. If any one is looking for some XC ski practice or get out and do some snow shoeing, nows the time.

Got any pictures of the north side of butler? Its on my list to splitboard, and I was thinking of heading out there last week but I went around sugarloaf instead.

About how much snow would you say the north aspect has, and is it filled in?

I looked at the north side, but cant remember how much snow was there. It had coverage, but I cant imagine that even 3 feet of snow would give it enough coverage to ski. There were still a lot of rocks showing on the flats, I would think that something that steep would need more. that said, I am not sure. Better go check it out.

Turns out I did take a photo of Butler.
There were a lot of boulders still showing on the flat fire road.

Here is a closer look with Butler being the middle peak in the back.
