Spectre Point, Coxcomb Mountains, Joshua Tree National Park

Post by wingding »

Yesterday moring I met Joe along Highway 62 a little over 40 miles from Twentynine Palms. We parked in a parking area next to an old dirt road that leads into the Coxcomb Mountains. The road has been gated and marks the boundary of Joshua Tree National park. Driving down the road is no longer permitted, so we walked down the road south then southeast for 4 miles until we hit a wash that runs southeast into the Coxcomb Mountains. After about 2 miles of hiking down the wash we came to a saddle. On the other side (south side) of the saddle the was where the wash that runs southwest to bring us to the base of Spectre Point started. We decided to cut over the hill from the Saddle heading southeast and then dropped into the southwest running wash a little higher up. Once we picked up the second wash we continued up it southwest toward the base of Spectre Point(a little over a mile). Once neared the end of the second wash, we headed headed up the Northwest side of Spectre Point to the summit. The total hike was about 14 miles with about 3,500 feet of elevation gain.

Here are pictures from our hike:

That's a long hike! We've come out in the dark a few times. That wash looks pretty rocky! Looks like a nice day!

Thanks Kathy. I'm going to J Tree tomorrow, day hike and find a spot to watch the moon rise.

I'm sorry about the typos and other errors in my trip report on Spectre - I thought I proofed it.

SN - It was a long hike, but not a real tough one. We kept thinking it would be like Sheephole, which killed us last year, but it wasn't as bad as that one.

Doug - I hope you get some great pictures while out in JT. It is a beautiful area.

The weather was really nice out there this weekend. I took a rock climbing class on Friday and then met Joe to hike to Spectre on Saturday. It was in the 70's during the day and I think it went down into the 40's at night.

This hike may have been easier than Sheep Hole, but it wore me out. I haven't hiked in six weeks. Maybe should have done an easier hike for my comeback from the illness. Even then I'm glad I did it. Got my pics up at

No, it wasn't easy for me either Joe and I haven't been sick. It just wasn't as bad as I thought it would be or as bad as Sheephole was.

Your pictures are really nice. You were able to capture some of the shots that I couldn't with my camera. Having it on the underwater setting for a while didn't help.
