Fishing first. Everything else brings up the bottom of the list.. :D
Yes, I take it all. You never know what you just MIGHT need. I'll leave the toilet paper, booze, or powerbars at home before any of this stuff.
Btw, the lure box, is 2 sided :unibrow:

That is awesome man, and now you know why I am avoiding getting into fly fishing haha... next thing you know I'd be rocking a high end sage/winston/orvis/tfo/st croix rod and/or reel. That is a nice fly assortment, and I do see some spinning in there too!

Jay,

I love everything i see on your lower right side of your pic. Most fish in a mature lake don't even light on the surface. Hoppers are hot as well, even for lakes that don't present, if you sink them.

I have to admit, i mostly spin fish. I like lil cleos, Kastmasters, panthers and roostertails.. Dressed work best for me. I'll clean up my little 4"x8"x3" tackle box for show and post it soon.

My Fly fishing friend brings twice what i carry, but to each their own. we both carry spare rods in case, well, in case we just want to fish if our primary is broken.

And just a general question.. What is with Thomas Boyant lures? they haven't worked for me ever, in 30 years.

I disagree with the idea that mature fish don't feed on the surface. Mature fish feed wherever there is food.

And I was going to encourage Jay... It's time to leave the spinning rod, reel, and lures at home. Make the jump, complete the journey to fly fishing. I still carried my spinning gear last year, and never again... I never took it out of the bag. It will likely not get used again in fresh water.

Thanks guys.

I only really want to fly fish. But I wont allow a trip to be ruined because of wind. Also, I backpack with my girlfriend who loves to fish, and uses a spinning rod.

I would have to say that in my experience, the bigger fish are most often not feeding on surface bugs, with the exceptions of big stones and hoppers.

May I cast (pun) a vote for the old fly n bubble? If fly fishing isn't really your bag, then a fly n bubble rig is a cool alternative for spin fisherman. Also, for all using lures with treble hooks, consider turning-in one or two of the hooks and/or crimping the barbs. I don't think there's an angler alive who hasn't had a small trout get caught in nasty ways on those treble hooks. Also as far as fly fishing goes, one can always fly fish with a slightly heavier weight rig. I mean weight as in rating not how heavy the gear is to carry. High winds on some lakes are usually handled more easily with a 5-6 wt rod. The heavier fly-line cuts through the wind better and the stronger rod is good for that one moment when big daddy decides to take your muddler. There was a time when a starter flyrod for trout was a 6wt.

Cheers,
B

Ok.. reviving this thread a little.

Here's mine:

There's a bait/fly/bubble side (yes, i sometimes throw the huge barrel weights on 4lb test to get out deeper, and it works if it's hot and the fish are down low):

bait side

And there's a lure side (with a smattering of wyld edge, roostertail, mepps, kastmaster, and lil cleo, etc mixed in):

I don't include pics of the worms or that extra jar of emergency power bait.

Backcountry gear.jpg

This is everything I carry except the rod cover (no hard tube) and bag for the gear. Foam pad at bottom left is for storing fly and leader. Also I have pretty much decided to eliminate the small z-rays as I haven't used one in the last two years. Also notice that some of the lures have trebles and some singles and I carry an extra packet of siwash hooks in size 6. Size 6 hooks make it almost impossible to catch anything 8" or smaller. I prefer single hooks but if I'm hungry and I'm losing fish I'm not beyond using trebles. It seems like single hooks are less likely to snag as well.

Love the Kastmasters to get deep!

Image

This pic reminds me I need to get some Panther Martins with some Black bodies and yellow dots.

Image

These Mepps should stay at home most trips. They just don't seem to work as well as the PM's.

Image

All the lures go into the Plano box in a heaping mess....
Mostly use the streamers in a fly/bubble setup with the 2 lb. Flouro pictured above.....rarely take the fly rod when packing. Mainly because I suck at it.
