Missing 25-year-old hiker in Russell/Whitney area

Postby LAhiker » Thu Nov 19, 2015 11:09 am

A 25-year-old UCLA grad student named Michael Meyers who had said he was planning to climb Mt. Russell or Mt. Whitney on the weekend of Nov 6-8 has been missing for over a week. Meyers is 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Yesterday at 4pm, his Dodge Durango was found on a side road near the entrance to the Whitney trail.

Here's a discussion of the case on the Whitneyzone forum:
http://www.whitneyzone.com/wz/ubbthread ... ike_Meyers

According to news reports (some of which haven't been updated), Meyers left Los Angeles on Nov 4 or 5th, planned to start a climb on Nov 6 and to be back at UCLA by Nov 9th. (One report says his family last heard from him on the 8th.)

Maybe someone saw Meyers on or around the weekend of Nov 7-8 and can help narrow down the search.

Anyone with information about Michael Meyers can call the Inyo County Sheriff's Department at (760) 878-0383 or UCPD at (310) 825-1491.

P.S. I'd include a picture of Meyers but don't know whether it's possible to upload one.

I'm still rather convinced that you can achieve more than you've ever dreamed of if you just lower your standards.

Been working with Mikes parents to get out as much information as possible.
Info as of 4:30pm, 11/19.

- Mike drove up to the Portal area on 11/5, he planned to acclimate for a few days

- He planned on doing Mt. Irvine, and if time permitted Mt. LeConte as a day hike on the 9th, not Russell on the 8th as previously reported

- Experienced, and had all the gear to successful complete hike, and to survive in the elements

- Texted his parents on 11/8, basic greeting, no info

- Left route information, planned on using "East Chute" route of Mt.Irvine

- Some wilderness permits were pulled and checked

- Has a -40 degree parka (red & black), black pants, and black boots, no further information available, did numerous -40/-50 degree outings in MN, where he is from originally

Wow, that changes everything. Thanks for finding all this out. While initial info is often wrong, I'm surprised it was this wrong. Is it okay if I simply quote you on the Supertopo thread, or do you want to post there yourself?

Would someone please post a thread on Summitpost about this, with a link back to this thread on HST, for some reason my account there is not co-operating. Thank you!

Let me know if anything should be changed. Also the posts on Whitney Zone should be updated though I gotta run soon.

Thanks, will post a link back to thread on WZ.

Found the following link, and it was supposed to snow on 11/9, 76% chance, and 26F, he could have changed his mind, and set out for an alternate location, or possibly there could be foul play involved. Trying to get clarification from the family on what Mike would have done in this situation. :(

If anyone would like to help, please dig up the webcam shots/video off the Whitney webcam for 11/9, so we can see the conditions that Mike saw that day. Thanks
