2014 Member Meet-up 7/22-7/27

A forum to initiate member meet-up. Looking for a hiking/climbing/fishing/skiing/etc. partner, or are you planning a trip where you wouldn't mind having some company? Last minute invites can be just as fun as a well-planned group trip (sometimes even better) so don't be shy! And be sure to post a trip report to the appropriate forum when you get back.

Everybody should be aware of the Badwater 135 ultramarathon schedule when making their plans. Due to the NPS's safety assessment, this race has been moved out of Death Valley this year. The race starts on 7/21 from Lone Pine, and the first leg climbs up to the Horseshoe Meadow trailhead. The race then returns to Lone Pine, goes to Cerro Gordo, then to the Darwin turnoff from 190, then back to Lone Pine and up to finish at Whitney Portal on the 23rd. Race HQ will be at the Dow Villa.

Woah. Wallace/Wright Lakes Basin. Some guaranteed suffering to get there. Two to three days minimum for most. Then again, that area is one of the very few I have not visited. Been all around it though. Setting up a shuttle would be a nice possibility.

Shepherd Pass. If I am not mistaken, has not that trail recently suffered some major damage? Was it repaired or going to be?

Yes it suffered damage, but some members have passed through the area since and
reported that it was fine to use, except for stock. Inyo NF reports the same.

Not really against going, but I know from the other thread "Trail Etiquette", I might just smile and walk on. ;)

I have two other trips tentative during the year, and this would infringe work-wise. Also, I know where everyone else will be, so more of the rest of the Sierra to myself.

Using Shepherd Pass: ~17 miles if you stay mostly on trails, about ~12 miles if you take the shortcut over the ridge, but the real killer is the 6000+ ft elevation gain, and rule of thumb is that you add a mile of effort for every 1000 foot gained. Death-marchers and Iron Man triathletes may not think that much of a challenge, but for mere mortals like myself past their use-by dates, its nothing to sniff at. Two days at least using Shepherd, more from other entry points.
I think it might be more fun (and easier) going from Cottonwood or Kearsarge, and go out Shepherd.

That's what I'm doing. Over Old Army pass, up through rock creek over crabtree pass, down crabtree lakes to trail, around whitney zone and up wallace creek, over to wright, then tyndall then shepherds pass.
What?!

This sounds like an awesome trip. I would love to make it, but I"ve already got a ton of other things goin on (two young kids) and thats during my wife's birthday.

These days I mostly do bonzai overnighters or quick weekenders. I do plan on taking my 4 year old daughter on her first backpacking trip. I cant wait!

If someone organized a "smaller" trip I'd be interested.
