I skimmed but didn't read all the posts. Pyra-queen col is more mellow than it looks but it's a lot of work getting from there down to the lake. As others have said, no fish in Kaweah Basin but the fish in Picket Creek drainage are definitely food sized. Not huge but good for that elevation, and chunky guys instead of the giant-headed alpine things in some areas.

Not a bad place to hang out!

Depending on my luck, I might be able to haul up some Kern river rainbows. It looks to be around 3.5 miles from the HST @ Junction mdw. 2 of those miles are via trail, so say 2 hrs total to get to the meet-up lake. That wouldn't be too bad out of water.

I may be able to do the same. I plan on taking a full day to hike and fish down and up the Kern from picket creek down about 6 to 8 miles, then back.

Excellent. So we can count on you to once again carry a heavy stove, pan and oil/condiments for a proper fish fry? :yummy:

My probable route has two nights below 10k before the meet-up, so I'm planning on making small fires and using branches to roast some natives on spits.

I replaced the heavy stove with two ISO/Butane stove heads. One for water and one with a wider flame spreader for the frying pan. The rest of the condiments will be there for a proper fish fry, and some hot peppers for Mav. Maybe I'll bring some of Da Bomb :crybaby: Bottled insanity.

How many attending are chocoholics? If enough of you are, know Oleander is, will
conduct a chocolate tasting at Island Lake too. :)

Count me in. I have not been into Kaweah Basin, but the photo ops and solitude look great, and I have the rest of the winter to plan a nice, long trip from somewhere to get there.

Easiest cross country backpacking route into Kaweah Basin from Kern-Kaweah River area east of Colby Pass? or is there an easier route?
