Tuolumne Meadows/Young Lakes/Mt Conness July 6-8

Post by bbayley80 »

overall a 2
hardly any on the hike out of the Meadows.
started getting hit after arriving at lower Young Lake. just a bit annoying throughout the day-few biting- a bit worse at dawn and dusk. large non-biting swarms..pretty strange.
just used Eucalyptus spray, no Deet.

hike to higher two lakes saw few-second lake seemed to have less than first lake- a bit more at third lake. hardly any as we climbed up over 12000+

nice breeze over the weekend helped out.

July 7-12 Mosquito Report Kearsarge/Rae Lakes

Post by Silverfox »

Trip out of Onion Valley, mosquitos almost non-existent
7/7 Flower Lake 0-1 a few mosquitos at dawn and dusk
7/8 Charlotte Lake 0-1 none during day a few at dawn and dusk
7/9 Rae Lakes 0-1 same as above
7/10 Sixty Lakes Basin - 0-1 first time I used any deet and only needed in small stretch from upper lakes to lower lakes along the creek
7/11 Kearsarge Lakes 0-1 a few at dusk

Great time, mosquitos were a non-issue.

Mono Meadow to Ottoway Lakes July 6-8 2012

Post by hiker_97 »

Wet meadow and stream crossings (daytime) 2
Most trail sections 0-1
Illilouette Creek (7200' elev) 1 during daytime, 2-3 during evening, early morning
Lower Ottoway Lake (9700' elev.) - 2 during daytime, 3 during evening, early morning
Mosquito head-nets highly recommended for a comfortable stay! With the netting on, I received very few bites this year and was pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for your post Hiker_97, and welcome to HST!

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Horseshoe Meadow, McGee, Little Lakes and Mammoth 7/8-7/11

Post by Peech »

All car camping and day hikes on this trip:
7/8/12 - Horseshoe Meadow walk-in campground and nearby meadow = 0
7/9/12 through 7/11/12 - McGee campground = 0-1, 2 right by the creek in the afternoon
McGee did have A LOT of non-biting bugs (moths, beetles, others) attracted to our lantern and headlamps at night. Wearing light colors = lots of friends on your back.
7/10/12 - Mosquito Flat to Ruby Lake, down and out to Marsh Lake = 0
7/11/12 - (Mammoth Lakes) Arrowhead Lake = 0, 1 by the outlet.
We were warned by backpackers on their way out that bugs were very bad...so maybe further up... By the Lake Mary Marina I was attacked by a few biting flies. They hurt a lot more than the mosquitoes!

Re:Lodgepole, Waksachi, in Sequoia. July 8-13, 2012

Post by Bargy »

Car camped in Lodgepole, about 100 feet from river, which was running lowish. Hot and sunny, arm nights, monsoonal flow clouds coming in by July 12. No rain at all. Mosquitoes a 2, used Deet because I was getting bitten, but I think that may have been flies rather than the mozzies. They left purple round 1cm bite marks which Ive never had from a mozzie - not itchy though.

JMT / Thomas Edison 7/7-7/13

Post by Oubliet »

July 7-13 on a trail crew near the junction of the Edison very trail at the JMT behind Lake Thomas Edison- 2

The mosquitos and the biting flies were pretty annoying in the evenings. It was so warm in the evenings this past week that the mosquitos didn't go away. The flies were pretty annoying all day. Some of them just buzzed, but occasionally, you get bit by one, hard.

Also, there were these little "no see-um" like small flies that bit your hands and ankles and left small, round, itchy red spots. I had not noticed them before on previous trips.
