It will depend a lot on the aspect and character of the area you will be heading into. It will make a big difference if you are not traveling through tight canyons, and on northern slopes. Big, wide open valley floors and meadows will melt out early, especially in the southern Sierra. That said, in 2017, Lizzie and I were skiing around the huge, flat Humphreys Basin in mid-June (see below), but the elevation there averages 11,300' or so. That was a really big snow year, but this is shaping up to be another one.I've got a trip planned starting June 8 in the 6,000-9,000 ft range. I don't mind crossing the occasional snowfield but am not looking to bring snowshoes and an axe. Should I just give up and find an alternate plan, or might there actually be enough melt between now and then to make this doable?
