Cedar Grove campgrounds

Post by mkbgdns » Sat Apr 27, 2019 1:05 pm

for the last 5 years, I've camped in Sentinel Campground the week after the road opened. two loops were open for self registration. the road opened on a Friday, and I went up the following Monday (when first weekenders left). this included 2017, a big snow year equal to this one.

this year the road opened yesterday, but the SEKI website states that campgrounds will not be open until May 22, four weeks from now. strangely, it also says that the lodge and market (private concessionaire) will open on May 10. in recent years, crews were working on preparing these facilities while I was camped in Sentinel. something doesn't add up.

called visitor center in Grant Grove, got the same message about campgrounds. sometimes those answering the phones aren't aware of fine details, or so I hope. will call SEKI headquarters on Monday. can anyone confirm or deny? is this the new, lean, mean, budget-constricted Park Service in action? don't want to waste a 5-hour drive to Cedar Grove.

Hi mkbgdns. Hope this helps.

April 25:
...all NPS campgrounds, including Cedar Grove, are delayed in opening this year, due to hazard tree removal. There will be no campgrounds open in Cedar Grove when the road opens. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it's to keep everyone safe. For more information about when campgrounds are scheduled to open, please visit our website: https://www.nps.gov/seki/campground-ope ... hedule.htm

April 23:
Crews are hard at work cutting down hazard trees that make campgrounds and other areas of the parks unsafe. If you are coming to visit the parks, and your plans include camping, please be sure to visit our new webpage that has the most current estimated opening dates for campgrounds, link below.

At this time we only have three campgrounds open in the foothills area of Sequoia National Park, and only one is accessible to RVs. The first estimated opening date for a campground in Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park is Friday, May 3rd.

Cedar Grove opens on Friday, April 26th for day use only. The lodge and market open on Friday, May 10th in time for Mother's Day weekend.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the safety of visitors and staff is our number one concern.
