Mountain Lion Activity Sierra NF

Post by maverick »

Sierra NF:
High Sierra Ranger District - Public Safety
We have had two separate and confirmed accounts of mountain lion activity within the Sierra NF. If you are a frequent hiker or visitor to Jose Basin or the Pine Ridge area we would like you to be extra cautious.

Here are a few tips to follow to keep you safe while enjoying your Forest.

If you do see a mountain lion, no matter how thrilled you are to be one of the very few who gets such an opportunity, stay well back, and take the encounter seriously.

1. Make yourself appear as large as possible.
2. Make noise.
3. Act like a predator yourself.
4. Slowly create distance.
5. Protect yourself.

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Have a safer backcountry experience by using the HST ReConn Form 2.0, named after Larry Conn, a HST member: http://reconn.org
