Trail and smoke conditions for Little Lakes Valley Trail

Any recent updates on the trail conditions as well as smoke on the Little Lakes Valley Trail? We are planning on starting at the Mosquito Flats Trail head and working our way to Gem Lakes.
Also - If anyone has alternative suggestions that would be greatly appreciated! We are experienced backpackers with 2 dogs. I have a lung condition that limits how far I can push myself, so I prefer starting at a higher elevation. Thanks in advance!
