I decided to try an early season backpack. We started at Mammoth ski resort, went over Minaret Summit,

down to the San Joaquin River ( not much water flow)

Up to Shadow Lake (lots of snow on the south side, very little on the north side

and then up to Lake Ediza. (Frozen, lots of snow)

Overall, the snow level was about 8000 feet. Lots of snow at 9000 feet. We saw no people in 4 days.
It was a strange feeling wandering about Shadow Lake and Devils Postpile with no people!

Thank you Robert for the conditions report. Did you sleep on snow, rock, or was there enough bare
ground at Ediza, cannot tell from your picture? Were you able to get water at the outlet of Ediza?

We were able to sleep on ground no problem. We just did a day hike to Ediza. Water was flowing at the outlet and would be no problem, but the lake itself was entirely covered. If we camped at Ediza, it would have had to be on snow.
