I might have waited for another month or two to post this, but considering the warm weather we've been having this winter I suppose there's no point in waiting...

From maverick's similar post last year, here are the deets for posting to this thread:
maverick wrote:1 - No mosquitoes or if there are some, but not biting yet (Blue)
2 - Very light during the day, moderate at dawn and dusk (Green)
3 - Moderate during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk (Yellow)
4 - Heavy during the day, heavy at dawn and dusk (Orange)
5 - Unbearable all day, no breaks, cannot eat outside of tent. If you stop, hundreds
will descend on you; when looking thru a camera viewfinder, you see more skeeters than
lake. If you slapped your arm, you'd smear blood from all the dead gorged bodies (Red)

Please do not post questions or ask about a particular area in this thread. Thanks

We may add a 2015 HST Map layer for this thread as we did in 2014, so stay tuned.

mosquito season is starting to pick up….

2 (or a 2 1/2) -- The mosquitos were visibly present but didn't appear too annoying (at least to me, at the time). Still, I had several bites. My travel partners applied repellent and were pretty much spared.

Couple weekends ago about Mather area of Yosemite that is a wee bit below 5k, there were areas in the forest that would rate a 2. Bound to rapidly worsen because of all the wet weather and snowmelt from the May 8 storm. Thus by Memorial Day weekend could be unpleasant between Tahoe and Yosemite but in any case less than usual for end of May. South of Yosemite there is also a modest amount of new runoff from melting snow from May 8 but because those regions had been much drier before the storm, there probably were not many squeets able to lay new eggs.

I spent a couple nights at Clover Meadow this weekend. The mosquitoes according to the scale above were "1". Actually that's literally 1... I saw exactly one mosquito during my visit :-). That's pretty good, as I recall a few years ago, backpacking in that general area in June, experiencing some of the heaviest mosquito swarms I'd seen ever before. Give it a week or so ... :-)
