Re: Access to National Forest trailheads during shutdown
Roads are dry and open, all campgrounds closed...we saw nobody at the top upper Kiosk thing.
Seems the only thing else closed per se is DPP...seemed odd.

Ah it didn't occur to me that so many names are shared between the two areas. No, I was talking about the Minarets Road near Mammoth Pool in the Sierra National Forest.zorobabel wrote:Are you talking about the road to Devils Postpile and Agnew Meadows? What is the campground in question? I can't locate Granite Creek...Does anyone know if the Agnew Meadows TH is accessible by car?canukyea wrote:Minarets Road was open all the way to a few miles before Granite Creek. Don't know about the campground itself because I didn't go that far.

Went up on the Kern Plateau this last weekend. There were self issue permits available at the blackrock station. All 4X4 roads and regular roads were open (lots of hunters having roaring bonfires too). Car campgrounds were closed and toilets locked or had "closed due to govt. shutdown" signs, but access tot he backcountry and wilderness is OPEN!
Fishing is still pretty good. Weather was very nice as well.

Well, if you're laid off in the real world (ie, business is down so they tell you to go home without pay, but you're not being fired and the company is still in business. They'll call you back to work when things pick up again), you can collect unemployment. Sounds like a similar situation to me.
Glad to hear the shutdown is over and things are opening up again!

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

Generally speaking, unemployment is far less than your normal salary. At least that's the way it is in my state.franklin411 wrote:Well, if you're laid off in the real world (ie, business is down so they tell you to go home without pay, but you're not being fired and the company is still in business.
