Yesterday “Smiling Sport” and I spent some time exploring the Sierra. We stumbled across something somewhat interesting. We took a few photos and thought we would share them with you.

These petroglyphs are located in a restricted area. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This prehistoric rock art is significant for the period of 1499 BC to 1000 AD.

These petroglyphs have been designated as Style 7, High Sierra Abstact-Representational. This type of rock art has been tentatively linked to the Martis Archaeological Complex.

Style 7 is the most complex of the rock art styles, with the most variety of elements and the greatest complexity of design. The most abundant elements include simple circles, concentric circles, lines, wavy lines and tracks. Dots, spirals, U shapes and naturalistic forms such as anthropomorphs and zooforms were used to a lesser extent. Vulvaforms and the incorporation of the natural rock features were noted at a few sites. The track element has been singled out as a possible diagnostic trait, appearing at all but two sites. Style 7 has many complex and unique figures and an overall greater abundance of elements than the other styles.

We took quite a few pictures. It was an effort to edit them down to the number posted.

Needless to say, the location of this rock art will remain strictly Top Secret.

ok. I removed my post in hope you would take away the petroglyphs. If you want them secret, you don't share them on the internet. your 12.jpg was not ok. a foot on the glyph.

anyway...

Those are commonly mistaken for petroglyphs but actually the phenomenon known as granite crop circles, obviously made by aliens trying to give directions to Area 51. ;)

Nice! I've seen some in Nevada and Oregon, but very few in California. Looks like a good collection of them.

Thanks for sharing.
