for those interested in early Sierra photography, there is an excellent exhibit at Stanford University's Cantor Arts Center featuring the work of the extremely influential photographer Carleton Watkins (Mt Watkins is named for him) ---- among other works, there are some 40+ photos from his 1861 and 1865-66 Yosemite portfolios. Highly recommended!

Thanks for the heads up!! I'm going to try to check it out this weekend.

Whenever I gripe about bringing my Large Format gear into the backcountry, I think of Watkins.

"The difficulty of access and the expense deter most of those who would wish to visit this place, yet a photographer packed in his apparatus on mules and took a series of the finest photographs I have ever seen."
--William H. Brewer, June 21, 1863 (referring to Carleton Watkins)
