Search & Rescue HST ReConn Form 2.0

Fellow Members and Non Members,

The learning experience that came with the search for our friend and fellow
member Larry Conn last year had me thinking of some sort of way in which we
could speed up the process of relaying productive and vital information to SAR.
The hours, days, weeks, and months spent on trying to figure out which route
Larry may have taken, verifying the gear and clothing he may have had with
himself on this trip, scanning receipts, making phone calls to retailers, searching
computer files, all could have been bypassed by filling out this simple form
which is called the ReConn Form.
Many folks do not have family members or friends who can relate to the dangers
that we expose ourselves to when embarking on our trips, much less understand
how to contact authorities efficiently, which numbers to call, and/or what useful
information to relay quickly to aid SAR in their efforts to locate us.
Not being sure what trailhead was used, which routes where intended to be
climbed, what approach routes may have been used, what gear or equipment was
taken, can all hamper the search effort and costs precious time which could be
avoided by simply filling out this simple form before a trip.
This simple form that a hiker, backpacker, climber, or fishing person can fill out
easily before each trip, leaving a copy with family, friend, in the car, will add an
extra layer of safety for those of us who enjoy visiting the great outdoors.
Electronic devices like SPOT or SatPhone’s also add a level of safety but as we
have seen in the past they are not always reliable, this form will add another level
of safety to your outdoors experience.

Update:
Very exited to introduce this new 2.0 HST ReConn Form. With this new
form we addressed the issues concerning the length of the original form
by using drop down text boxes, and also the issues with people using different
platforms for downloading the form. It now has a much more modern,
streamlined look, that we hope will also appeal to our younger and tech
savvy demographic too. Two very important additional text boxes have
been added, one for uploading your current personal photo, and another
for uploading map (urls). This addition will make SAR’s job figuring out
a missing persons intended route simpler, and quicker, which is extremely
important when time is of the essence.

Would like to thank Jeremy Bishop (Supertopo member), a web designer, and
a concerned outdoors man, who sent me an e-mail back in September with a
suggestion and sample of an alternate shorter form. Jeremy was very patient
and accommodating as we made further changes to the form during the next
several weeks. Jeremy helped make my vision become reality through his hard
work, dedication, and especially his belief in what we were doing could save
lives in the future. My hope is that many of you will find this new form even
more useful, and that even more of you will take advantage of its benefits.

Fellow HST Members,

Bumping this up so our new members can take advantage of it. Even though we have
it posted in the "Announcements" section many folks may dive into the "Backpacking"
section without reading the "Announcement" section as we have noticed with new
members asking for trip advise recently, but also posting it for our current members
as a reminder to take advantage of our form as the season comes upon us. May all of
you have a great and especially safe season in 2014!

I just downloaded the PDF form, and while I was filling out the basic information, the photo caught my eye and I had to chuckle. Oh, man, do I know exactly where that is, and do I have the scrapes and bruises to prove it!
