Horsetail Falls at Sunset

Had an opportunity to get up to Yosemite yesterday (2-18-10) to try and capture the "Natural Firefall". I also had the pleasure to meet Edie from the 'View from the Little Red Tent' blog.

Took this a few hours before the event...

Hi Mike

I really like the gold color on the first shot only wish that the falls/flow
could be seen more.
The second is nice too, I would personally take down the highlights/brightness
a touch on the reflecting granite.

Do you have multiple shots, same shots from tripod, and maybe multiple
exposures to combine in photoshop or photomatix pro?
Might make for an even more dramatic shot with more of a flow showing.

In the morning the flow was pretty steady. By the later part of the day, the wind picked up and started blowing the water up and to the right, so no amount of photoshop or blending could help. But, I did use two exposures to blend in the shadows a bit. :D

Edit: Here's the same day, different location. It's also about location, location, location....

BTW, I met him early in the day.

NICE! i shot from the northside on sunday but it was only a pale golden color then. i had to quickly send my own version on tuesday for deadline needs. seems four newspapers were waiting but thankfully i didn't know about this until after i sent my photos (had enough pressure). i wish i had had time to tone mine better. laptop from the yosemite lodge lobby left viewing conditions to be desired...

Mine was the same, almost pale gold tone. I changed the WB to 'Cloudy' and that helped a bit. Now that I know where to go, next time I may stay a few days and go to different locations.

I have though about going up to the southern edge of the Valley, somewhere
around Sentinel, or some optimal point where you could get a perfect angle looking
down at the falls.
It would be a 4 day outing, with a 300 mm with extender, or larger lens.
Now this would give you an angle, and perspective no one has shot before, talking
about unique.
