SLR Camera Holder

Post by rrivera »

For those of you who carry SLRs...when you are backpacking what do you carry them in? I have a Canon XSi and I carry 1-2 lenses with me depending on the trip. I've tried to hook my small tamarac bag onto my hip belt but find it just really gets in the way of me hiking and if I just strap it across me my shoulder gets tired. I like to take pictures when I'm walking so I definitely want my camera easily accessible. I'd appreciate your ideas.

I carry mine in a homemade carrier made out of sil-nylon and close cell foam for padding. Probably doesn't help much in the sense of getting ideas for a particular brand/type, but I will say that having a waterproof outside is a major plus. I sewed mine with a harness so it can ride on my front for easy access, but these days carry it in my backpack more often than not. I know there are commercial brands out there with a harness system, I've just never used them personally. A final note is that I sometimes carry a small point and shoot to take photos while hiking (with my other gear stowed in my backpack) and carry it in a small pouch I attach to my hipbelt or shoulder strap...with the mindset that I find a lot of the pictures I take while hiking don't necessitate using my SLR, and if it does I'm going to probably take my pack of anyway.

I like these: http://products.lowepro.com/catalog/Beltpacks,7.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I had the Off Road but recently got the Inverse AW 200 because of the size of
my new camera.
The Off Road worked well with my 30D and 2 lenses.

I use the LowePro AW200 as well. It's a little smaller than I would like, but it is relatively low profile so it fits under my Camelbak while day hiking. I just purchased a Binocular Harness from Cabelas to carry the camera while hiking. I won't be able to test it for a couple of weeks.
