OH YES! I've done half of it continuously and plan on doing all of it this year. I read somewhere that it is the single most popular long distance trail in the world? I can't guarantee that but the amount of people on it sure makes it that way.

Here's a photo from a place on it:

Probably my single favorite scene while on it almost 2 year ago.

So you see a lot of people on it even that far in the woods? Interesting. Would think you'd be further away from people more than anything.

The JMT is a beautiful trail certainly worth doing but it's covered with people from end to end. I have seen 30 people in a couple hours on it. Almost every place to camp is heavily used. Normally If you want to have a fire you need to go far and wide since everything is picked clean.

That's what I wanted to ask. Out there you still have to use the campsites? Or can you pick a random spot in the woods?

You can camp anywhere you want as long as it follows the standard set of camping rules.

In order to keep this thread some what on topic:

Thanks Rogue! Those previous few posts really need to be moved off of this thread!

over a dozen times. Lost count somewhere in the mid nineties.

Here's a shot from 1988, first time out and first time at Wanda Lake below Muir Pass

we're actually thinking about going again this summer, although we rarely go the actual JMT route. After so many hikes, you find some alternate routes you eventually adopt as "your JMT" route. This year, if we go, we'll probably spend more than half the distance on route other than the official JMT.

Please keep discusions and questions about backpacking or trails for the "Backpacking"
section folks, photo's only in this thread. Thanks

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.
