The rusty metasedimentary rock of that area adds nice color to the landscape.

A fisherman I spoke with on my stop there said he flipped out many short skinny undernurished eastern brook from Upper Monarch. I've never hiked the spur from the lower lake up there though saw it from the Sawtooth Pass trail. The excellent potential image I wanted in that area but was thwarted from earlier this due to too breezy wavy water is from the east shore of the lower lake in the morning after sun has just illuminated all the west shore. what makes that special are the several isolated foxtails pines atop the slope above standing nicely against the blue sky that forms an excellent graphic.
