I second the rock pile (or any other natural platform that can be fashioned with what you find on the ground). I used to carry a tripod but decided the weight just wasnt worth being able to set up the handful of shots that I might get to take, if conditions happen to be perfect. I guess it depends on priorites... if you are taking pictures professionally i get it, otherwise leaving it at home saves weight and encourages you to not get overly wrapped up in taking a photo.
Carrying a light DSLR with a plastic lens or two, with, nothing else, seems to be the sweet spot for reasonably low weight without major sacrifice to photo quality.
