High Sierra Topix

Hey Everyone - Am so grateful for this list. I'm new to the HST and am wondering if anyone can recommend a good starter class to learn the basics of outdoor photography. I live in the L.A. area but would travel if it was a good weekend workshop.

As a decades old photographer I'm not familiar outdoor photography workshops, especially those on digital photography in this era. When it comes to introductory level knowledge of outdoor photography, simply using current instructional books, online tutorials, and sites like this:

Are more suited to educating a person in the technology which one really ought to get well grounded in first before refining skills with a field workshop with a group of students where instructors really cannot get into much depth on cameras or processing. But then you may already be well grounded and even an experienced photographer looking to understand field work. Best of luck finding a class.

Thanks for the info. The REI classes are all GoPro focused but will keep looking. And yes, just doing my own research and trial/error on the trail may be a good way to go .

I put down the film camera for many years, then recently (6 months ago) got a deal on a dSLR that I couldn't refuse. I soaked up everything I could. I already had a good grounding in the basics. I grew up around manual exposure.

What I did was started living at Barns & Noble. I read everything on the subject I could find. I refused to buy the books because after a reading or two, they would never be picked up again. The basics are reiterated ad nausium, so they quickly became the areas of a book to skip. I also joined a digital photography school website; not a formal school, but many tutorials and a forum full of very good photographers willing to help. Naturephotographers.net has quite a few essays on landscape as well.

Some of us learn better with formal instructions and others learn better following their nose in a piecemeal fashion. Hope you find the class you're looking for. In the meantime, there is a wealth of resources to keep you busy until you find the class you want.

I know it sounds silly, but a good place to look is YouTube. A lot of knowledgeable photographers are on there, and give great tips. I knew a lot about photography, but still have a ways to go, and they gave me a lot of good information.

I have never done a photography workshop because they are so pricy, but if I was going to do one in California, it would probably be with these guys, Jim Patterson and Josh Cripps.
