Camping along the way to Kaiser Pass?

Hi everyone! I'm planning on hiking out of either Edison Lake or Florence Lake this coming weekend. I'd like to start my drive from the Bay Area on Friday night and camp somewhere along the way, so I can pick up my permit early Saturday morning at the High Sierra Station.
Does anyone know of a good spot to camp out that night near Kaiser Pass? Nothing special, just a spot to throw down my bag for the night. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks! ~ Kurt

No specific site to suggest, but because this area is national forest land (and not within a designated wilderness), my understanding is that it is legal to "primitive camp". Just find a nice easy (or rough if you have 4wd) road to turn off on and finding a spot should be pretty easy (I'd recommend trying to find a previously used site and practive leave no trace ethics). The forest service requires a campfire permit (annual and free) if you intend on making a campfire or using a stove outside a campground. You can pick this up at any forest service office. You may want to call the Sierra National Forest to see if there are any specific restrictions in that area. Hope this helps.
