Thanks Tom, sounds like another good option. It's nice to have a few options in case the others don't work out.

yes, very possible. If you're moving as fast as your day 1 plans suggest, you will probably catch up with us on the southern half of the trail as we are still heading south. We'll be right on the JMT starting around Bear Ridge, so unless you're extremely fast, you should not miss us while we're doing some alternate routes on the way south.

current plan:

Code: Select all

30-Jun Happy Isles - Sunrise Camp
 1-Jul Sunrise Camp - Tuolumne
2-Jul Mono pass trailhead - Alger Lake
3-Jul Alger Lake - Reds Meadows
4-Jul Rest Day Reds / spare weather day
5-Jul Fish Valley up to Grassy Lake area
6-Jul Grassy Lake - Goddale Pass, Graveyard Meadow
7-Jul Vermillion resupply, Bear Ridge, Marie Lakes
8-Jul Hang at lake half a day, Salley Keyes Lakes
 9-Jul MTR supply, Goodard Canyon
10-Jul up to Muir Pass region
11-Jul Muir Pass region - Golded Staircase area
12-Jul Golden Staircase - Lake Marjorie
13-Jul Lake Marjorie - Rae Lakes
14-Jul Rae Lakes - Bighorn Plateau
15-Jul extra day / weather day for MTR-Whitney leg
16-Jul Bighorn Plateau - Mt Whitney
17-Jul Mt. Whitney - Portal
18-Jul Portal - Mt Whitney Summit
19-Jul Whitney Summit - Junction Pass north Side
20-Jul Junction Pass - Woods Creek
21-Jul extra day / weather day for southern leg
22-Jul Woods Creek, Pinchot - Upper Basin
23-Jul Mather Pass, Dusy Basin via Cirque Potluck Knapsack
24-Jul Helen Lake
25-Jul Helen Lake - Blaney Meadows-MTR for respupply
26-Jul Blaney Meadows - Selden Pass, Marie Lakes (half day)
27-Jul Marie Lakes, Bear Ridge, Silver Lake
28-Jul Silver Pass - Duck Creek
29-Jul Duck Creek - Reds Meadows
30-Jul Reds - JMT to 1000 Island Lake area
31-Jul 1000 Island - Tuolumne Meadows on JMT
1-Aug extra day / weather day
2-Aug Tuolumne - Clouds Rest summit night
3-Aug Clouds Rest - Yos. Valley

We're not going to keep the same mileage throughout the trip, we're have 3 weeks and want to spend our time and enjoy the scenery along the way. We're only planning on covering that much distance the 1rst day because our permit starts at TM, and the idea of hiking YV to TM without packs does sound appealing. Have done this section of the JMT so many times that I don't feel like I'll be missing much in not taking our time.

We will be leaving Whitney on July 23, so it looks like we ought to cross paths around the 20-22.

My hiking partner (Russ) and I are really excited. I've wanted to do this hike since I was a kid.

The part from the valley to TM has never been one of my favorite sections. After doing it twice in the late 80s, I haven't been back there since. However, it's now been long enough and there's that full yo-yo idea, so we really have to include it. On the way north we will go over Clouds Rest and then perhaps out via Glacier Point and the 4 mile trail, adding some variation.

If our trip goes as planned, we should be North of Glen Pass when we cross paths. Look for an adult with two unusually young hikers that will look pretty worn out at that time.

Look for two adults; one half the age of the other (I'm the older one:)).

Look for the hat and boots that are in my avatar; and an exhausted look from carrying the videocamera (also in avatar) along with tripod, lenses, filters and batteries.

Let's see, my hiking partner is half my age and will not be carrying the 10-15 lbs of video gear that I will..hmmmmm... :-k

above image is a frame off last year's HD video footage :D

my complete camera gear this year, down a bit from last year when I carried a useless solar charger to keep things going.

Canon HV20, Raynox wide angle, carry pouch 985g 34.7oz
External Microphone Canon DM50 115g 4.1oz
Spare battery 70g 2.5oz
Remote battery pack DIY unit for e2 Lithium cells 150g 5.3oz
Circular Polarizer 19g 0.7oz
Cokin Filter Holder 20g 0.7oz
Gradient Gel filters gray and tobacco 20g 0.7oz
DIY tent pole tripod 160g 5.6oz
TOTAL 1539g 54.3oz

The kids carry about 10-12lbs, while I am hauling 45-55 pounds, depending on food load.

Wow! I'm impressed, my video cam alone weighs over 3lbs (w/battery). ](*,)

But I like my camera and the flexibility it offers (and the lenses).

I know what you mean - if were to bring still cameras, I'd be hauling a lot more weight as well. Being more a still photo guy, I don't feel the need to haul the pro video gear - it's never going to be as good as stills. Prirotiy is that the kids complete their hike, not that I get some sort of Discovery Channel program out of the trip.

And what the little camera does, is pretty darn good (link needs Flash 10, and the more bandwidth, the better)
