Fourth of July - Need a ride from South Lake to North Lake

Post by gbrown09 »

I have a permit for a multi day trip from North Lake to South Lake starting Wednesday 7/4. I want to leave my truck at the South Lake TH so it is there when I hike out, but I am hiking solo and don't have a way to get to the North Lake TH. I have never hitchhiked before and I'm a little nervous about it - in particular the uncertainty of how long it might take to find someone to pick me up and get to the trailhead. Can anyone with experience provide any insight on this? Are there any other (reasonably priced) options for arranging a ride/shuttle? Or better yet, is anyone on here going to be in that area on the 4th and willing to give me a ride for some gas money?

Hitch hiking should not be an issue. Hikers helping hikers is typical. I dont think I will be up there then, but IF I do happen to be up there I would be happy to give you a ride.

I've hitched rides from South Lake before. For the worst one, I waited a couple of hours. For the best one, I waited about five minutes. The South Lake parking lot is small, and there is only one way in and one way out. So, I wait on the driver's side of the road about thirty feet from the parking lot. I have a paper sign "RIDE" that can be made by a Sharpie on the back of a map. In one case, I was trying to get to Bishop, and that worked well. The driver would not accept any gas money from me. In one case, I was trying to get to North Lake, but the driver got me down to the first intersection, so I started walking uphill from there. A half-mile later, I got another ride up to the Sabrina/North Lake junction, so I had to walk up to North Lake from there. It could have been worse.
