But is that pot sitting on pine needles, with hot coals on top of it? I don't think that's the approveed installation by the USFS!

It's a grass mulch in my back yard next to a swimming pool.. I do the cooking in a Weber or ceramic tray if I am doing coals on the bottom. Sometimes I only put coals on the top to finish the recipe as in these images. I do not recommend using a Dutch Oven in high fire conditions that include low humity and high winds. Sorry if these images portrayed that as OK.

Really? I've seen some aluminum ones that were really thick. They looked solid and looked like they'd conduct heat thoroughly and evenly.

well.. i'll take cast iron any day over aluminum.. don't need the medical stuff that "might" come with aluminum..

Yeah, there was a scare about aluminum and Alzheimer's a few years back. That has been discredited. It turned out to be baseless.
