Need packing advise

Postby ibiz » Mon Aug 13, 2007 12:31 pm

Next week I will backpacking in the sierra for 5 night with my 8 year old son. My question is how do people put 1Tent, 1Sleeping bag, bear canister, and etc. into a internal frame backpack. I own Gregory Palisade, REI Taj 3 Tent and BearVault 400 pack. Where do you put it?

When I hiked long time ago, we did not need bear canster.

I'm not an expert when it comes to packing so I hope others pitch in here. What I do know is that the Gregory Palisade is a good pack to fit a BearVault 400. Last year we rented slightly lighter REI packs. First, we put the sleeping bags at the bottom into the sleeping bag compartment and then put the bear canisters above our sleeping bags. The only problem was that they sometimes jabbed into our backs while we were walking which is why we bought Ursacks this year. I don't recommend you taking a REI Taj 3 tent. For 2 people, it's too bulky to carry and it weighs too much - 7 lbs. 13 oz packed. If you have time say a few weeks before your trip, maybe you could buy a smaller lighter tent. Maybe someone here can recommend a lighter one. Last year, we divided our ancient Sierra Designs 2 person tent into the fly and tent which my wife carried and I carried the poles and stakes. I put the poles and stakes on top of my pack where I carried my sleeping pad. My wife stuffed the tent and fly above her bear canister. We put our cooking gear and clothing gear at the top. I hope this helps.

I use a kelty flight (internal frame)

sleeping bag on the bottom
thermarest against the back so its padded from canister
canister on top of bag, upright
clothes on the side of canister
tent, jacket, raingear, on top of canister

stove, etc goes inside canister if room, or else on top.

tent is Stephenson Warmlight . . . 2 lb 13 oz and is 5'x9' . . . lots of room for two, but is pricy.
