There's a new InReach coming out soon as well. It's called the "Mini". It has two-way messaging just like the existing InReach models but weighs about half as much. It's essentially the same size/weight as the Gen3 Spot. The least expensive annual plans coupled with the initial costs are comparable between the Mini and the "X".

Besides the cost and service plan, you have to a make a decision who's satellites service you trust, Globalstar's or Iridium's?

I don't give out specific route information, my belief is that it takes away from the whole adventure spirit of a trip, if you need every inch planned out, you'll have to get that from someone else.

iridium has been rock solid for me in the Sierra and the Sawtooths in the past 2 yrs.
