High Sierra Topix

Thanks to all. I haven't made a change yet. Still looking really. I may go with an ULA-Equipment pack.

A couple of our group returned Osprey packs this past June to REI - both 60 and 85 models. Went with ULA packs (just before they closed for several months) - used them for the first time this August into Rae Lakes from Onion Valley. Best fitting pack I have ever used in the multitudes I have had over the past 25 years. Not a bit disappointed - great workship and materials - just had to wait for awhile. Will be ordering another pack for my brother as soon as they reopen in December.

These were GoLites, correct? I wasn't sure since you mentioned Osprey. How many nights did you use them for and how much weight did you carry (not including water)?

No GoLite - the packs are from a small company based in Logan, Utah - ULA-Equipment (http://www.ula-equipment.com). The owner manufactures them in his former 3 car garage - we passed by his shop on the way back from Bear Lake - neat setup! His web site is quite interesting with photos and staff information. Believe there are himself and two others who make the packs. One individual carried 30 lbs including a Bear Vault 400 - fits perfectly at the bottom of the pack (horizontal); the other hefted 38 lbs with the same Bear Vault. The trip was six days, and we probably carried too much, but the packs were marvelous. I also have a Gregory Palisades (too heavy), REI UL 60, Gregory Z, a couple from EMS, Mountain Smith Phantom, Kelty Illusion (way too many in the spouse's view...) - but the Catalyst model (base weight is 43oz, 4600ci/75 liter) from ULA has stopped my spending quest (my wife is very grateful!). I can see this pack lasting and performing for many years to come. We took them in to our local REI to show to fellow a back packer, he was excited and jumping on line to place an order. I do intend to order one more when Brian returns in December and starts filling orders again. I suspect he is off hiking and enjoying life. This year's Back Packer gear guide, page 38 has a review - we didn't experience the "Lone glitch" of shoulder straps rolling outward, it was simply comfortable on the trail.

I have a GoLite Speed pack. It's a lot less rugged than the New Star (which I also have). So far I have used it mainly for hut trips and my bike commute into work (carrying change of clothes, food).

I have done some fair-weather 2-3 day backpacks with it, limiting my weight to around 30 lbs. No problems with discomfort, but I feel I need to be a lot more protective of the thin fabric.
