Trek Talonz in Backpacker Gear Guide

The Trek Talonz were reviewed in the 2007 Backpacker Gear Guide. I’ve been using them since they were in the early stages of testing and have been happy with them, especially on steep terrain. The Trek Talonz give you extra traction in all kinds of terrain, and they rotate freely on the pole, reducing the tendency for the poles to unlock.

Thanks, Snowy! I'll give those a try when I can -- didn't know they rotated; that's a real advantage. Now, if we can find a set that automatically collapse when they get stuck in a crack...

I have a pair of the trek talonz. They now have a plastic piece that you can attach to the basket to turn it into a snow basket. I might give them a try this weekend.

The trek talonz work better than the standard basket because they rotate, but they do get stuck in bushes along the trail pretty easily. I only use my poles occasionly and it's usually when coming down loose steep stuff, so the the way they stick to bushes isn't a big issue for me. If I were using poles all the time then I probably would go without baskets completely unless hiking in the snow.
